The SUP Directive: reducing single-use plastics

Since 2019, the EU’s Single Use Plastics (SUP) Directive has aimed to cut plastic waste and stimulate recycling. Paper cups are not banned, but their use, collection and recycling are subject to stricter rules. Each member state interprets the directive differently: in the Netherlands, for example, reusable options are encouraged and producers are responsible for collection. 

At CUPSZ we make sure our cups, bowls and buckets comply with these requirements. And with solutions like Bekervriend, a Dutch program for separate collection and recycling,  we help partners close the loop in a circular way.

Bekervriend: recycling in the Netherlands

For the Dutch market, CUPSZ offers the possibility to use the Bekervriend system. This collection and recycling program ensures that used coffee cups are collected separately and processed into new raw materials. PPWR: the next European regulation

In 2026 the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) will replace the existing packaging directive. It will introduce stricter rules for recyclability, reuse and supply chain transparency.
